Military tents have long been a popular style of tent, especially for
those who have no connection with the actual military. These tents are
commonly found at scout camps or trekking. This category of tent enjoys
an established market, which requires imposes of specific quality
requirements on tent fabrics, that it must be tremendously
weather-resistant, allowing them to be used and re-used even after
exposure to the most extreme weather conditions, which can range from
severe rainstorms to the harshest sunlight.Perhaps the most well-known style of military tent is the small pup tent. They are fabricated of a high-quality fabric which is strong, tear-resistance and water-repellant. These tents are commonly available in heavy cotton, polyester/cotton fabrics or polyester.
Construction of a military tent
- The tent fabric or tent inner comprises the roof, walls, and the sewn-in groundsheet of the tent.
- The poles provide structural support and they may be collapsible for easy storage.
- Some designs of military tents use rigid poles, typically made of metal, or sometimes wood. Other designs use semi rigid poles, typically made of fiberglass, or sometimes of special metal alloys.
- These tents come with rain fly, outer, or flysheet. These sheets are attached over the top of the inner.
- They are designed to make minimal contact with the tent fabric itself, and sometimes have a small pole of its own.
- The fabric of military tent is usually waterproof and may be made of canvas, nylon, or a more modern breathable material.
- Stakes or pegs are used to fasten these tents to the ground. Some of these are even attached to ropes that pull outward on the flysheet to give the tent additional stability.
A quality military tent, which promises durability, uses aluminum poles, which are lighter, stronger and won't break. The outer surface of the tent is coated in a polyester fabric that is extremely sturdy. These tents are even available with their own environmental control ducts for heat and air conditioning.
